The Cars

We've re-created the liveries of 8 Porsche 908/3s from the early 70s - Have a look below!
#12 Gulf - Targa Florio, 1970
Jo Siffert and Brian Redman claimed pole and then took this to victory in the 1970 Targa, winning by over 90 seconds from the 2nd place car, the #40.
#4 Martini - Nurburgring 1000Km, 1971
The 3rd-placed car, driven by Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko (Yep, that Helmut Marko).#40 Gulf - Targa Florio,1970
Driven by Leo Kinnunen and Pedro Rodriguez. it took 2nd place, securing a Porsche 1-2 in that year's Targa.
#83 Montjuich - European Hillclimb Championship, 1973
Being based on the 909 Bergspyder, the 908/3 was perfectly adapted for hillclimbing duties. With Juan Fernandez at the helm, this car won its class that year.

#20 Salzburg - Targa Florio, 1970
Entered by the works-supported Porsche Austria team, this car Qualified 2nd, but recorded a DNF. Vic Elford and Hans Hermann drove.
#42 Reinhold Joest - Watkins Glen 6 Hrs - 1972
While the Joest Racing team as it is today wasn't established until 1978, this private entry, driven by Reinhold Joest himself and Mario Casoni, took fifth place overall.
#8 Martini - Targa Florio, 1971
The sole Martini entry in the 71 targa, driven by Porsche factory drivers Gerard Larrousse and Vic Elford. Qualified 4th, but didn’t finish.#3 Montjuich - Le Mans 24Hr, 1973
In a race dominated by Ferrari and Matra, Juan Fernandez, Bernard Cheneviere and Francisco Torredemer hung on to claim Fifth overall.

Qualifying Format Settled

We've settled on a random grid, but just going straight into the race with set as random doesn't give us the chance to record the order before people set off.
So, there'll be a parade lap around the short 'Amalfi Coast' version of the track first, with a random grid - the lobby points from that race will be used to set the grid for the Targa itself.

Introduction

What is the Targa Positano?
Back in the 70's, one of the other great endurance events alongside Le Mans was the Targa Florio. Wven though it was part of the World sportscar championship as contested by the Mighty porsche 917s and the like, because it was held on very tight twisty public roads, the factories would enter lightweight, manoeverable cars.

The race was run like a hybrid of a long rally stage and endurance race, in a very similar format to the Isle of Man TT motorcycle races.

The cars were set off at intervals and scored on total time taken to complete the event (like a rally stage)

As in an endurance race, the race was on a circuit over a number of laps, with drivers swapping over at pitstops. Forza 3's race settings allow a good recreation of the event on a smaller scale.
The Car:
The Lotus 2-eleven is the freebie car from the Autoweek DLC pack. A small, open-top sportscar, it's very redolent of the Porsche 908/2s and 908/3s that ran at the event from 1969-1974. In stock form it's easy to drive, with a nice power/handling balance. It also has pretty good brakes, and is relatively cheap at 66,000Cr. Traction Control, Stability Managment, and ABS will be banned. Gear shifting to be free.

The Venue:
Rally di Positano is an ideal venue for this sort of event - winding, climbing, twisting in and out of villages and towns and through the mountains. Testing has shown an expected lap time of 6 minutes and 30 seconds or so.

The Format:
The starting order will be set randomly. The competitors will start at 20-second Intervals, and the race will last for 10 laps, after which the times will be noted. The roll-off delays will then be subtracted, and the final result announced.

Dates, Times & Entries

The Targa will be held on Wednesday the 21st July. All times given are in UK time (BST).

8:00 PM Invite window opens.
8:15 PM Invites open to reserves if any places are still free.
8:20 PM Parade lap, Grid Confirmed
8:25 PM Race Starts (I hopelessly overcook turn 1 and go into a wall backwards)

The Rules

Cars:
Cars must be Lotus 2-11s, in completely stock condition. No Vehicle Upgrade or Tuning modifications are allowed.

Aids:
Suggested Line is Permitted
Automatic Gears are Permitted
Braking Assistance is Prohibited
Traction Control Is Prohibited
ABS is Prohibited.

STM is Prohibited
Damage will be set to Limited

Qualifying:
The Grid will be randomly set. To allow a chance to record Roll-Off delays properly, There will be a parade lap around the "Amalfi Coast" version of the track prior to the Targa itself.

Don't overtake during the parade lap.

The Race:
The race will be for 10 laps of the full 'Rally di Positano' track.
The grid will line up in order and be released at 20 second intervals.
After 10 laps, all total times will be recorded by taking a photo of the screen, and each person's time will be calculated by subtracting their Roll-Off delay from the total.
Results will then be posted to this site!
